USask Moving to a New Method of Collecting OER Usage
Starting in the 2025 fall term, a brief form will be used for instructors to report their use of open educational resources (OER) in courses.
By Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching and LearningIn early 2025, USask celebrated ten years since the first adoption of an open textbook in a large course. Since then, the use of open educational resources (OER) has grown considerably. During the 2024-25 academic year, the number of courses that include the use of OER instead of commercial texts has grown to more than 50, with most having multiple sections using OER.
Given this growth and because the number of courses is probably under-reported, a new method of reporting the use of OER by instructors has been rolled out. If you are using OER in your course(s) instead of commercial materials, you should complete this brief form to make sure your course is counted.

The form asks the following questions, and we ask that instructors fill in answers for the questions that they can. Each course should be submitted separately.
- Instructor(s)
- Name of Course Using OER
- Course number
- Course section(s)/CRN(s)
- Approximate enrolment (all sections in total)
- OER material(s) used (link(s))
- The approximate cost of any course materials that the OER(s) have replaced (if you know this)
The list of courses and number of students benefiting will be shared with administration and the USSU.
The total number of students benefiting will be shared with the government as part of reporting on the provincial funding for OER projects.
If you have questions about the form or would like help or information on finding appropriate OER for your courses or accessing funding for an OER project, please contact the GMCTL.
