What is TrackPoint?

TrackPoint.ai is an AI-powered oral simulation and communication practice platform designed to help learners rehearse the kinds of spoken interactions they are likely to encounter in the professions they are preparing to enter.

Learners can practice oral conversations with AI-generated conversational partners, including client or patient interactions, workplace conversations, oral interviews, presentations, and negotiation scenarios. The platform also provides automated feedback intended to help learners refine their oral communication performance over time.

What is the purpose of TrackPoint?

TrackPoint gives learners opportunities to practice profession-specific oral communication in a low-stakes environment and receive immediate feedback on their performance. Potential educational applications include:

Why use TrackPoint?

TrackPoint may be valuable in courses where students need repeated practice with profession-specific oral communication. Educators often provide this practice through peer role plays, simulated patients or clients, instructor-led scenarios, or clinical placements, but these opportunities can be limited or difficult to scale.

TrackPoint can help prepare students for those experiences and extend them by providing repeatable, self-directed practice with interviews, presentations, negotiations, client or patient conversations, and other profession-relevant oral interactions. The platform also provides feedback to help learners refine their oral communication skills before and between higher-stakes practice opportunities.

  • Complete the USask AI Literacy Tutorial and ask your students to complete it as well to develop a shared understanding of responsible and effective GenAI use.

Align simulations with course learning outcomes and the oral communication skills students need to develop.

Do not use activities that are not clearly connected to course goals or disciplinary communication expectations.

Use TrackPoint.ai for low-stakes practice, formative development, and preparation for higher-stakes oral communication opportunities.

Do not use TrackPoint as a high-stakes assessment.

Incorporate reflection after simulations and encourage students to use feedback to revise and try again.

Do not plan for one simulation attempt to be enough for meaningful oral communication development. Provide multiple opportunities.

Provide clear criteria or rubrics so students know what effective oral communication looks like in the discipline.

Do not use the AI feedback as the sole source of assessment or decision-making.

Frame AI feedback as developmental and something students should interpret critically. Encourage students to discuss and share their results with peers.

Do not assume feedback is always accurate, neutral, or free from bias.

Use TrackPoint to extend access to oral practice before and between role plays, clinical placements, simulated patients or clients, presentations, and interviews.

Do not treat TrackPoint as a complete replacement for authentic human interaction or professional practice settings.

    • Under USask’s Enterprise agreement with TrackPoint your data is protected and stored within Canada.

  • Bias:
    • AI-generated communication feedback may be influenced by biases related to language, accent, communication style, or cultural norms.
  • Sign Up/Sign In:
    • TrackPoint is currently part of an AI pilot and has not been released university-wide.

  • Customization:
    • Most customization of the tool occurs at the design and building phase between TrackPoint and the instructor. Limited aspects of the tool can be customized by students to suit the learning context and outcomes.

Learners need to work in a system that is fluid and requires a minimum number of steps in systems that are intuitive and integrated.
