Kahoot is approved for academic use.

What is Kahoot?

Kahoot is a web-based tool that allows for the creation of question-based learning games that can be created by either instructors or students.

What is the purpose of Kahoot?

Kahoot allows instructors and students to create learning games for a variety of purposes including:
  • Pre-assessment to determine what students know about a topic yet to be covered
  • Understanding of content currently being learned
  • Review of content prior to summative assessments

Why use Kahoot?

  • Instructors can create content to help gauge how well the class overall has grasped concepts.
  • Can be used for either synchronous or asynchronous activities.
  • Allows for a variety of types of questions (multiple choice, true and false, questions involving images, open ended questions, etc.) depending on subscription of instructor.
  • Allows students to create learning games as part of presentations and other activities.

Learning Technology Ecosystem (LTE) Principles

Kahoot most directly address these LTE goals:

Active and social Learning is a process of meaning-making, constructed through learning with others, and as a part of an intentional, deliberate system within a course and across experiences.

Designed for reflection and growth Learning is refined and extended through prompted and supported opportunities to focus on understanding and next steps.

Efficient and easy to use Learners need to work in a system that is fluid and requires a minimum number of steps in systems that are intuitive and integrated.

Inclusive of learning-centered assessment Learning and feedback are iterative, and assessment comes from multiple sources, including self, peers, teachers, and outside experts.

Best Practices

DO

DON'T

Create formative assessment / feedback activities

Use Kahoot activities for summative assessment

Encourage learners create Kahoot activities to help each other review before exams

Require students to create accounts or enter personal information

Allow students to integrate Kahoot activities into presentations

Use for USask work aside from Teaching and Learning

Account holder should ensure compliance with terms of use, for example, do not share accounts/log in information
