What is Claude?

Claude is a generative AI tool developed by Anthropic. It can generate and revise content, summarize and analyze source materials, support coding, and help users work through complex questions. Projects organizes related conversations and sources, while Artifacts provides a separate space for developing reusable documents, code, visualizations, websites, and interactive resources.

For USask users with the applicable paid subscription, Claude also includes access to Claude Code and Claude’s agentic work capabilities, (formerly called Cowork), where enabled for the user’s plan and platform. Claude Code is a separate environment for working directly with codebases. Agentic work capabilities can carry out multi-step tasks using selected files, folders, tools, and connectors while showing the user the actions taken.

Claude is approved for use by faculty and staff use and is available at a fee. It is accessible via PAWS under the channel name ‘AI Tools’. (USask NSID login required)

Learning Technology Ecosystem (LTE) Principles

Claude most directly address these LTE goals:

Designed for reflection and growth - Learning is refined and extended through prompted and supported opportunities to focus on understanding and next steps.

Designed for students who are remixing or creating - Learning is most effective when systems are designed to help learners find, create, and/or repurpose significant content for the value of themselves and others.

Best Practices

  • Review the GenAI Literacy Framework to guide appropriate GenAI tool use for you and your students.
  • Complete the USask AI Literacy Tutorial and ask your students to complete it as well to develop a shared understanding of responsible and effective GenAI use.
  • Make expectations of GenAI use explicit in the syllabus, identify whether use is required or optional, provide alternatives, and consider no-cost protected tool before requiring students’ paid access.

DO

DON'T

Use Claude mindfully by considering the environmental impact of each interaction. GenAI tools like Claude require significant resources to operate.

Don't overuse Claude for tasks that could be done more effectively by other means. Consider whether AI is the best tool for the job before using a GenAI tool.

Use Claude as a brainstorming and thinking partner.

Do not assume generated information is accurate.

Follow USask AI data-handling guidance and confirm that you have permission to upload source materials.

Do not allow generated code or calculations to bypass disciplinary review, testing, or validation.

Critically evaluate AI outputs before use.

Do not grant access to directories, systems, or information beyond what is necessary for the task.

  Provide detailed context and instructions.

Do not enter personal, confidential, restricted, identifiable student, unpublished, or third-party content unless authorized under applicable USask guidance.

Use multiple iterations to improve results.

Do not use Claude as an AI-detection tool.

Use Claude mindfully and consider whether generative AI is the appropriate tool for the task.
